The brain has repetitive low frequency waves along with a large array of higher frequency ones. The higher ones deal more with establishing patterns of brain firing while the low ones focus on connections between consciousness and awareness.

Low frequency brain waves range from 1 Hz to about 50 Hz. They are classified into five different categories. Lowest frequencies correspond to deep relaxed state while higher ones to a more active state. EEG machines are used to reveal the activities of these brainwaves. The five categories are :

Delta 1 – 3 Hz deep meditation and dreamless sleep

Theta 3 – 8 Hz normal sleep state

Alpha 8 – 12 Hz quiet flowing thoughts

Beta 12 – 38 Hz dominant waking state of thinking

Gamma 38 – 42 Hz simultaneous processing, universal love

Many meditation CDs focus on using these frequencies to help individuals retrain their brain to improve meditation. Dimensional Transitions does more.
